The Kids Are Alright (1979)

Enjoyed the music, and seeing them in concert and interview footage I hadn't seen. Not a super-compelling documentary though.

I have a hard time imagining there are people living like this, but I guess there are. Mostly a fun movie.

Get Smart (2008)
3.5/5
Rachel and I took the boys and we all enjoyed it--especially the stapling. I also liked Bill Murray's cameo (my kind of strange), although it didn't exactly fit in with the rest of the movie.

Homem Que Copiava, O (2003)
4.5/5
Brazilian film with English subtitles. I loved it. The characters are all interesting and believable. Mostly a comedy, with some tragic events but the movie still ends upbeat. Really interesting work. I hope to see more from Jorge Furtado.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

This is pretty good! I think I liked Bill Hader's character the best, even though his was just a supporting role. The beginning of the movie got a lot of laughs!

Waitress (2007)

Plot was OK. Shows a happy ending where the girl DOESN'T get the guy. The use of color in this movie is interesting...they're all vivid/saturated. Visually compelling.

Last Man Standing (1996/I)
3/5
An entertaining movie based on Yojimbo and Fistful of Dollars. In this one, Bruce Willis finds himself in a Prohibition-era ghost town where the Irish and Italian mafia are in a war to control the flow of alcohol through the town en route to Chicago. Lots of life-hardened men having gunfights.

I think that Will Smith is a better actor than Charlton Heston, but other than that, there's not a lot I got from this movie that I didn't get from Omega Man. In fact, some of the plot elements are make no sense. Like, when the woman shows up to save Will Smith, I didn't buy that she could be that tough, yet allow them to follow her back to his place. And while the ending in the lab was well done, the trip to the gated community at the very end made little sense. Especially the part where God told her it was there. If God was that active of a participant, why didn't he just stop the virus, or at least save Will Smith's family too? Nope. Not buying it.

Mildly entertaining. I laughed in a few spots. My opinion, which I'm sure will be controversial, is that Dances with Wolves (1990) has some of the same story elements but is better done than Jeremiah Johnson. Discuss.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Top notch acting, and a story line that gives you something to think about even after you've left the theater. This is anything but formula, and sometimes that's a good thing.

Beowulf (2007)

Great show. Rachel and I had a fun time. Amazing realism. I was surprised the MPAA gave this a PG-13. My 13-year-old will be waiting a few years before he is allowed to see it. Too gory for children.

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
4.5/5
A well-made western with traditional themes of survival, greed, and morality. Even though real people don't behave the way they behaved in this movie, I still loved it. Now I want to see the one that was made in the 50s.

Halloween (2007)
3/5
Once in a while I'll watch a horror movie. Rachel is quite the expert in that genre. This was one of the better ones I've seen. The interesting this about this one is that it attempts to show you how it is possible for a child to grow into a mass murderer.

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
4/5
The good thing about Bourne showing up in New York is that we can finally have high-speed car chases with beefy American cars, rather than those little European ones. There were a few problems with the story...like why everyone headed off to Morocco at one point. The reason given in the plot was weak. It was clear they just wanted a new venue to leap around on rooftops. Still, the action was good enough in this movie that you can sit back and eat your popcorn and ignore any other problems with the movie. Great fun.

The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
3.5/5
I found myself on the edge of my seat through The Bourne Identity but maybe less so through The Bourne Supremacy. Sill, a great action movie that commanded my attention. The second showing I enjoyed more than my first--perhaps because the second time through I didn't notice the shaking camera effect as much.

Superbad (2007)
4.5/5
Just the sort of sophomoric comedy that Rachel and I love on occasion. As coarse as the humor was, the movie actually has a positive message and is very, very funny. Can you tell I'm slightly embarrassed that I liked it so much?

The Bourne Identity (2002)

Ikiru (1952)
2.5/5
A Japanese man with fatal stomach cancer changes his life after the diagnosis. Unfortunately, this movie was made for idiots. The first half is OK, but then the second half (which doesn't contribute anything new to the story) is just a lot of people reminiscing at his funeral about what we already knew happened in the first half, as if we hadn't caught it the first time around and it needed to be pounded into our heads again.

I haven't read the book, but Ayn Rand also wrote the screenplay for the movie, and I've read that it captures the ideas she puts forward in the book well. The plot is a little boring and doesn't stand on its own very well--it's merely a vehicle for the ideas and ideals Ayn Rand espouses. But I like that the movie (and presumably the book) makes you think and take a stand on issues such as society, individuality, conformism, selfishness, and personal motives. I think Rand is a little short-sighted with some of her ideas (she doesn't let them grow into what they could be), but I admire the unflinching way she puts them forward.

Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

There is more than a little cynicism in this movie about the marketing side of patriotism and the role it plays in funding the war effort. But I wouldn't call it inaccurate. I thought it was well done and worth watching.

2007-06-30 13:48
Given the choice between watching this, or a nice game of cards, you should definitely go for the card game. However, this is pretty fun too, and I enjoyed Rowan Atkinson's role. The rest of the performances are somewhat forgettable.

A documentary about a young Bob Dylan on tour. I was interested in this because it was made by D.A. Pennebaker, and I enjoyed his work on Monterrey Pop. The documentary is well done, but you can't help but feel a little empty after watching an ego-filled Dylan rant about things he's too young to have much of a grasp on. You gotta love the music though.

Oh, to be young with no responsibilities and enough of daddy's money to do something like this. Follow two young surfers from California to Hawaii, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti as they search the perfect wave. Sort of reminds me of those two kids riding scooters across the USA this summer that you can follow on youtube.

300 (2006)
4/5
Visually impressive. Lots of stylized violence, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought it might, because it was more artistic than realistic. Some of the speeches were over-the-top and worthy of eye-rolling, but the rest was pretty fun.

The Departed (2006)
4.5/5
Some say that this movie only won Best Picture because Martin Scorsese was due for an Oscar, but that other Scorsese pictures were more worthy than this one. That may be true, but my feeling is that The Departed fully deserves the Best Picture Oscar. Honestly, it surprised me how much I liked this movie.

Slaughterhouse-Five (1972)
4/5
Multi-faceted, interesting work. Three different time periods from a man's life are portrayed, but since this man has been released from the limitations of time, they overlap and weave together in an interesting way. I've heard the book is better than the movie. Perhaps I should read it.

Laberinto del Fauno, El (2006)
4/5
Fairy tale for adults. Rated R: too much violence and darkness for kids. Rachel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I expected more fantasy, and less reality, but the side-story of rebel fighters battling the soldiers guarding a mill in fascist Spain was actually more interesting to me after a while. The commander of the soldiers at the mill turned out to be the real monster of the story. Very well done.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006)
3.5/5
A very good documentary, although some of the methods used to make it aren't entirely ethical. I agree with much of the comentary--too much emphasis is put on sex and not enough on violence, etc. However, I do think that a rating system is a good tool for parents. The problem is that it isn't only used by parents. Films with certain ratings are actively boycotted by theaters and rental companies, for example, and that has nothing to do with parents using the ratings to decide what is appropriate for their children. So, the premise of the film--that the MPAA rating system is broken--is true, but not always for the reasons mentioned in the documentary.

Children of Men (2006)
3.5/5
Engaging movie. It depicts a future world where no children have been born for 18 years and society is deteriorating. I appreciated the acting and the sets, probably a little more than the plot. I liked Michael Caine's role, but Clive Owen is also very good.

Concert for George (2003) (TV)
4/5
This was a tribute concert for George Harrison on the first anniversary of his death. It featured various musicians performing George's songs, including Eric Clapton and Tom Petty. Ringo and Paul were there and performed. I also enjoyed Monty Python. I would have given this five stars except my taste for Indian music is not as developed as George's was, and that was a large part of the first half of the concert.

Set at the time of the Aztec empire right before the arrival of the Europeans, the striking thing about this movie is the brutality; slavery, murder, and human sacrifice are common. However, the highlights are the enduring human themes of family, love, and commitment.

The Lake House (2006)
2.5/5
Romance along the lines of "An Affair to Remember" or "Sleepless in Seattle" but with a time-shifting twist. Also, those other two movies are better than this one. This one is fine, but didn't hold my interest. Rachel rather liked it though--especially the scene at the party where Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock dance and then kiss, when he knows who she is but she doesn't know who he is yet.

Blood Diamond (2006)
4.5/5
This movie was targeted at me--one of the ignorant masses--who didn't realize the extent of the problems surrounding "conflict" diamonds and other natural resources in some parts of the world. I thought the movie did a great job at shining a spotlight on an international problem, while giving us a great action movie at the same time.

An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
3.5/5
Every time I hear a coworker tell me that they don't think global warming is real, I want to buy them this DVD. This is a good documentary. When it was over Rachel said, "Good you already drive a hybrid." I said, "There's a lot more I should do." I'm thinking I could reduce my waste, and especially Styrofoam usage when grabbing a hot cup at work or takeout at lunch. I could bring a mug to work and eat at the cafeteria with a real plate.
