Mnemosyne,
Lovely Goddess,
Came to see me yesterday.
She whispered low for me alone.
Rumbling sounds of city streets
Grew enviously silent, awed,
Furtively listening.
Only I could hear her words
Breathed soft like night-wind
Over expanse of sage:
"Ho, lonely one,
Thy birth-land is waiting...
Waiting....
Sunlight lays warm and white
Upon the hills, and the hills
Patiently wait....
Dark cedars stand tall and proud,
Waiting....
Meanwhile, thou tarry here in land alien.
Counting pieces of time
With gold tally."
Insistent clamor of city streets
Frightened Mnemosyne
And she went away.
But she will return.
Always she returns.
